Overview: Using the five themes of Geography to examine the Greatest Places video

 

Grade Level: Middle School/Junior High

 

Greatest Places Themes:

 

Geography Standards Alignment:

How to analyze spatial information about people, places and environments on the Earth's surface

Patterns and networks of interdependence on Earth's surface

How human actions modify the physical environment

How physical systems affect human systems

 

Outcomes: To be able to successfully apply the five themes of Geography to a variety of places.

 

Time Needed: 1- 50 minute class period

Materials: World's Greatest Places video animatic, or omni film video from the Science Museum of Minnesota

 

Prior Knowledge: Students should be familiar with the 5 themes of Geography and the Mnemonic Device Mr. Help

 

Activities: Remind the students of the 5 themes of Geography. You may want to use some examples to refresh memories. Hand out the video organizer and ask students to write examples for each theme based on the video. All may not be covered in the video.
