The Louisville Science Center will create a room which will provide hands-on interaction with items related to the seven greatest places. Items in this room will include the trunk provided with the film, teacher guide, family guide, posters and a world map hanging within the room, activities/inquiry stations created which relate to the greatest places (these will be set up by place and visitors will get a stamp on their passport as they visit each place or activity station), reading area with books related to greatest places including both children and adult books (also provide resource list of where visitors can find more info.). Possibly include television showing video of the making of The Greatest Places film and/or current videos on the greatest places (like national geographic videos). Possibly include computer station with CD rom of Greatest Places Web site and current geographical technology such as GIS and/or Geolink.
There will be two preview events for the Greatest Places film. The first will be a preview for Louisville Science Center members only and the second will be a public opening. The Science Center will provide a speaker in relation to the greatest places, either before or after the film preview. Possibly have a lecture series for seven consecutive weeks; a speaker related to each of the greatest places each week (market to senior organizations). Provide Family Guide to audience members. Each week for seven weeks, a children’s book regarding the seven greatest places will be read to visitors by local celebrities. Possibly have each member bring an item to represent their place which will then be exchanged with another member to share what makes this item representative of their place and why.
The Louisville Science Center will provide teachers with Teacher Guides prior to their visitation, it will be mailed to them when we receive their reservation. I would like to conduct a teacher institute or at least workshop/conference to prepare them for and get them excited about Greatest Places during summer, 1998. In conjunction with Marcia Lile, my teacher partner, we will give presentations at local and state social studies and science organization meetings/conferences regarding The Greatest Places. The Science Center will support Marcia Lile and other area teachers to ensure that their experience with The Louisville Science Center and The Greatest Places is the greatest!
Hope to use Greatest Places as film and theme for camp-ins for 1998-99. Classes and activities will be developed around the movie.
Consider activities which will focus on family literacy of science and social studies in conjunction with NSF grant received.
Create connection with our local place - Possibly do local and regional trips to our greatest places (students could make their own film about local greatest places) - connect film to the Ohio river and its importance in our community. Inform these visitors of the opportunities to visit The Greatest Places through the Science Museum of Minnesota.
Continue communication and connection with members of this GPLI. Continue communication with Okavango Delta place team and Okavango Delta (Selma?) to link these four countries. We would like to have students (rural group, urban group, and senior citizens group?) communicate through written correspondence, e-mail, art, and culture boxes.
Continue to develop ideas and activities surrounding The Greatest Places film and e-mail them to The Science Museum of Minnesota. Stay connected with e-mail and Web site and The Science Center of Minnesota. Link Greatest Places Web site with The Louisville Science Center.
