Overview:

Students will communicate regarding Greatest Places activities. Students will dialogue regarding culture, physical characteristics, and geographic features of thier area.

Grade Level:

5th-7th

Greatest Places Theme:

Connections/Inter-relationships/ cultural diversity

Objectives:

To practice writing skills. To compare geographic regions of USA. To compare cultures.

Materials:

paper & pencil , stamps, videotapes, trunk, trunk contents

Activities:

Write letters to assigned pen pals. (Monthly)
Create a video illustrating physical geographic features of each place.
Create a culture trunk & exchange.

Assessment Strategies:

Writing samples to place in portfolio.List steps of how to make a culture trunk. Video production of physical features.

Timeline:

August 97- June 98
Tampa collects items for trunk- (Aug-Dec 97) Send trunk-Jan 98
Namibia collects items for trunk-(Sept 97-Mar 98) Send trunk -April 98
Pen pals - begin in August, continue thru May 98
