Program Overview(s): approximately 2 hours in length, teachers participate in hands-on activities based on components in The Greatest Places trunk. These activities will use the artifacts in the trunk as well as activities from the Imax film teachers guide.

 

Program Goals: To give teachers authentic experiences in using hands-on materials, to understand the importance of place, of diversity, to connect the activities with their own places.

 

Program Dates: fall & winter 1998

 

Implementation Procedure: arrange selected materials from trunk at stations in a classroom, set up multiple copies of selected activites from teachers guide for teachers’ tables. Teachers will try out the activities from the teachers guide in cooperative groups as well as investigate materials from the trunk.

 

Time Needed: 2 hour long session held on a weekday after school, plus hour preparation time and hour clean up time

 

Materials: trunk materials and materials from selected Teachers Guide activities

 

Location: The Franklin Institute

 

Program Audience: Philadelphia area teachers (Philadelphia and surrounding counties)

Program Title(s): The Greatest Places demonstrations

Program Overview(s): concepts from the Imax film and The Greatest Places trunk in informal demonstrations for Museum visitors. Demonstrations presented by Museum interpretive services volunteers and paid floor staff.

 

Program Goals: to allow Museum visitors to make connections from the greatest places and their own personal place using river concepts

 

Program Dates: September 1998 through February 1999

 

Implementation Procedure: scheduled 20 minute demonstrations for Museum visitors in selected locations. These demonstrations will be advertised within the Museum on the daily activites board as well as slides in the Omni theater itself. On a table or cart set up near the Omni theater entrance, informal museum visitor/staff interactions with items from the trunk. Also within the Changing Earth exhibit, a river delta, falls creation demonstration at the stream table, connected to local rivers and falls (i.e. Schulkyll River, Delaware River, East Falls).

 

Time Needed: 20 minutes for demonstration (additional time for preparation and clean up)

 

Materials: selected from The Greatest Places trunk, Museum’s steam table exhibit including supplemental demonstration pieces and related devices (sediment tubes, wave/beach making tank), selected teachers guide activities (contour map activity)

 

Location: demonstration cart near Omni theater entrance, Changing Earth exhibit hall

 

Program Audience: Museum general public visitors (families and school groups)

Program Goals: provide more information and activities to families visiting the Museum and attending the Omni film

Program Goals: provide Museum members with SMM’s tour information to visit the greatest places

Program Overview(s): activities for visitors waiting in line for the show

 

Program Goals:

Implementation Procedure:

 

Time Needed: less than 3 minutes (repeated through the line)

 

Materials: simple, hands-on activities (i.e. Greenland string game; hand-out sheets with phrases in native languages; simple "place" activity - visitors in line check their purses or pockets for items that represent their personal place; display near Omni entrance where visitors vote on their favorite place)

 

Location: The Franklin Institute Omni theater queue line

 

Program Audience: general Museum audiences, all ages

Program Goals: provide Museum audiences with direct contact to some of the greatest places through individuals who have visited the areas

 

Program Dates: monthly during run of Omni film

 

Implementation Procedure: contact local speakers and schedule events for inclusion in 1998 membership brochure, have available necessary equipment such as video equipment or overhead projector

 

Time Needed: half hour to 45 minute programs

 

Materials: varied, but may include video, overhead equipment

 

Location: The Franklin Institute, Musser Theater or Stearns Science Auditorium
